As Knife production continued to grow throughout the 1800s, so too didknife demand from both locals and tourists alike. In 1902, Allan Forbes opened his successful store on Third Street which soon became known as The Knife Shoppe due to its wide variety of knives available for purchase. Clarksdale is a town located in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 14,912 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest municipality in Marshall County by total area. Clarksdale was founded on October 8, 1872, by General John C. Frémont and his forces during the American Civil War as a landing point for Confederate troops seeking to cross the Mississippi River into Missouri. The town's name is derived from Colonel James Fenton Clarke's purchase of 640 acres (2 km²) of land in what is now Clarksdale on December 12, 1871. The town site was chosen because it would be less likely to be raided by Union forces than other locations in Marshall County due to its strategic location between both Union armies and Arkansas River crossings. After first being called "Fentonville", the name was changed to "Clarksdale" in honor of Col. Clarke's purchase. The post office at Clarksdale was established on July 1, 1873, and remained open until it closed on November 29, 1957. The first postmaster was Jephtha Boggs who served from 1865-1868; Hosea Peebles followed him in 1869-1870; Wm Dickson served from 1870-1875; Jno Treadwell took over from him in 1886-1887; Hiram Ladd served from 1888-1892; Atherton Whartonserving from 1893-1901 On October 8th of each year (the date that General John C."
