In 1829, Norwegian immigrant Ole Andreas Biegandt started farming hereabouts. He organized a township (later called Townships 2-6) around 1870, which became an official municipality in 1892 after it merged with City of Duluth. At that time, only men could vote; women did not gain full political rights until 1905.
