Woburn, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 16,879 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Woburn is home to the world's largest concentration of IBM employees, and many other high-tech companies and research institutions. The town has been called "the Silicon Valley of America". The first settler in what would become Woburn was John Endecott who arrived in 1768. He built a small cabin on Pond Hill and named it Endecott Station after himself and his father, Increase Endecott. In 1825 Nathaniel Parker moved to Woburn from Quincy and started a general store there that became one of the most successful in the region. In 1827 he founded what would become Brown University in nearby Worcester; today Brown University is one of the most prestigious universities in North America with more than 100,000 students enrolled each fall. In 1837 John Stephenson purchased land east of present day Fenway Park for $2 per acre from Samuel Colt; this became Stephenson Park Historic District which still includes part of Fenway Park today. At that time there were only 4 houses in Woburn (now all gone). By 1840 there were 36 people living here including 14 men working at local mills: 12 blacksmiths,, 3 shoemakers, 1 tailor and 2 wheelwrights - all part of what would come to be called "the First Fleet" - arriving from Great Britain just before Thanksgiving year 1840 as part of a large shipment led by Commodore James Kenedy Jr.. A post office was established at Woburn on December 15th 1850 by Jno Gage under title "Nashua". On July 15th 1861 an actwas passed entitled An Act for establishing Post Offices throughout the United States And for other purposes therein mentioned; This act provided for post offices at Nashua (now Nashua), Bedford (now Whitman), Manchester (now Middleton), Newmarket (now Needham), Framingham (now Framingham elmwood), Everett (later Wayland) and Woburn...and authorized George Higginson to erect a pound stamp office within three weeks...On November 20th 1860 Samuel Colt granted patents numbered 724, 815 & 816 to Anthony Fenton & others for their Improvements in Mail Delivery Systems; these patents covered both mail delivery through wagons using horse power as well as use of mule teams pulling wagons laden with mail across country...This event marks perhaps the first time that American technology had made it into Europe The Townspeople petitioned Governor Oliver Wendell Holmes III asking him to annex their village because they claimed they did not have enough residents to support themselves without government assistance so they could keep up with larger communities like Springfield or Boston which had already annexed them . Holmes agreed but recommended against annexation because he felt it would deprive them of important tax benefits which went along with being annexed . However , when President Abraham Lincoln took office he ordered Holmes3 change his recommendation . After much debate among officials including Secretary Edwin Stanton decision was made on January 26th 1863 to annexations were approved but no public ceremony took place until February 9th 1863 when residents formally received their new townships packages ..After annexation travelers found out about different services available such as schools, churches etc now located inside their newly created townships ..One downside was that some people felt left behind since mostoftheir old homes/townships were lost during annexation
