Taunton, Massachusetts is a town in Massachusetts. As of the 2010 census, the population was 397. The name Taunton is derived from the term "tawny" (a color designation used for young corn). The first settler in what is now Taunton was Nathaniel Parker who arrived in 1630. Other early settlers included John Winthrop and his brother Samuel. In 1764, the town was chartered by order of King George III as a part of Middlesex County. The town became an agricultural center with large estates being developed around Turnberry Pond and Cedar Hill. Industries started emerging such as tanning, brewing, shoe manufacturing and cheese production during the 19th century. After World War I, Taunton experienced growth as soldiers returned home and began to settle in the community. During this time there were several political parties active in the town and many churches were built or renovated including one dedicated to Stowe Parish Bishop Nicholas Perot on Main Street. In 1922, Taunton annexed adjacent communities of Easton and Southborough which increased its population to 1,500 residents while still maintaining its small-town feel. Growth continued through annexation of neighboring towns during postwar years until 1961 when it reached its current size with the addition of Wellesley Township . This growth allowed for new shopping malls, housing developments and other businesses to be established throughout downtown Taunton while preserving much of its historic infrastructure

Taunton was first settled in 1635 by Puritans. The town was originally calledVTunborough, and the name was changed to Taunton in 1781 to honor General George Washington. The history of Taunton goes back to 1635 when Puritans arrived in what is now Massachusetts Bay Colony looking for land beyond New England. They were not successful and returned home after only six months. In 1638, Reverend John Eliot founded Walthamstow Baptist Church on Meeting Street in Taunton. Eliot had come from London after serving as an official translator between English Congregationalists and Dutch Calvinists during the religious civil war known as the English Civil War (1643-1649). In 1639, Eliot built a house on Meeting Street which still stands today and continues to be used as a meeting place for the townspeople today. He named his new community VTunborough after his birthplace at Tunbridge Wells in Kent County England where he had been born two years earlier that year on October 12th of that year (the date below is marked with an asterisk). In 1781, during the American Revolution against Great Britain, VTunborough became part of Massachusetts when its inhabitants ratified a resolution ratifying the Articles of Confederation which formed America’s first government. After independence was achieved on July 4th of that year by defeating British forces at Saratoga Field near Yorktown Heights – one of America’s largest battlefields – many people emigrated to Pennsylvania or other parts of North America seeking opportunities for themselves and their families underlying British rule were forfeited including VTunborough’s sizable population who remained behind until 1820 when they finally were forced out by advancing settlements around them made possible by newly acquired statehood within New England due to demographic changes brought about by waves of immigration over time including Germans (the largest wave since 1600), Irish Catholics fleeing religious persecution under French rule following Ireland’s partition into Catholic Northern Ireland (now Northern Ireland), African Americans escaping slaveholding states throughout Yankee America prior to white settlement there; Italian settlers arriving soon afterward followed later waves from southeastern Europe following revolutionary upheaval across much of Western Europe.)
