In 1847, an 8x50mm military rifle scope was erected at Gould's Wharf to serve as a primary target sight for artillery units stationed in Boston Harbor. This scope is still used today by artillery units at various locations around Boston Harbor including Fenway Park and Harvard University. In 1861, an improved 10x50mm military rifle scope (model "Eagle") was installed at Gould's Wharf and served as the primary target sight for artillery units stationed along most of New England during the Civil War. The Eaglescope is still being used today by many fire teams and officers responsible for providing aerial targets during air training exercises throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island
