The first permanent settler in what is now Marlborough was Nicholas bought land from Abraham Winthrop in 1633. Nicholas built a house on what is now Main Street and named it "Marlborough". A post office was established there in 1795 and remained open until 1868. The first store opened in 1824 by Nathan Fenton and continued to be run by him until 1907 when it closed due to competition from surrounding towns. In 1830 Samuel Morse set up a sawmill here on Saugus River which became one of the largest sawmills on Cape Cod. After Morse's death his son Alfred operated it for many years before being sold to Ebenezer Chase who reopened it as an flour mills beginning operation around 1800. In 1840 John Dennison founded Dennison & CompanyMQR (later called Jardine) which stored goods at Waltham Bay for shipment inland during times of heavy ice cover over Cape Cod Bay; this company remains extant as a commercial enterprise today with its own mill complex located near Marshfield, MA). In 1854 $5,000 was invested by local citizens Isaac Taylor and Amos Brown in developing Burlington Canal which connected Quincy with Wareham via Marblehead; this canal remains an important transportation artery today linking Wareham with Boston and other parts of New England including Rhode Island

Marlborough, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 6,451 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Plymouth County and one of the five townships within Plymouth County. The name "Marlborough" comes from an English place-name that means "humble place." The first European contact with Marlborough was by Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1493 when he explored the area while on his way to explore North America. He named a creek after himself and another creek after Husbandman John Winthrop who had accompanied him on his explorations of New England around 1520-1525. In 1627, Samuel Adams founded Harvard University here. The town began as a small village called Westfield with about 100 residents in 1737 when it became part of Plymouth County. On July 1, 1803, Marlborough became a town under the jurisdiction of Plymouth County with a population of 3,671 people. In 1824–1825 Congress passed an act creating new counties in Massachusetts following the Census Bureau's recommendation that all towns be put into one county so that easier administration would be possible and since there were already too many villages within Plymouth County for it to handle alone. As a result of this law change (and because Marlborough lay within the newly created Berkshire Judicial District), Marlborough had to establish itself as an independent town and submitted its application for incorporation to the Board of Commissioners on November 5th, 1824. On December 4th approval was given but due to financial problems developed at Town Hall there was no vote held on incorporation until February 2nd 1830 when it finally happened with 7 votes against incorporation (the only vote against incorporation came from Ebenezer Mudge who had earlier sought secession from Dartmouth College).
