Fitchburg, Massachusetts was founded in 1798 by Benedict Arnold and his men under the command of General John Sullivan. The town was named for the founder, Fitchburg had a population of just over 100 people when it was first platted. In 1812, during the War of 1812, Fitchburg was involved in a skirmish which resulted in the death of two soldiers. It wasn't until 1861 that Fitchburg became an incorporated city. By 1870, the population had reached 2,500 people and by 1916 it hadgrown to 4,500 people. However, World War I interrupted all these growth rates and by 1920 Fitchburg's population only numbered 1,000 people. After World War II came economic prosperity and throughout the late 20th century new housing developments went up around town as businesses moved out or closed down. However with increased traffic and pollution coming from nearby Boston this has led to some decreases in citizenry since then. In recent years there have been several redevelopment projects taking place within town limits including Oneonta (2007), Northborough (2009), Andover (2013), Granby (2015) and South Hadley (2018). All of these projects are designed to improve public transportation connections within town limits as well as create new jobs opportunities for citizens. Overall it seems that despite predictions from some quarters that downtown Fitchburg would be abandoned following gentrification efforts; this hasn't happened quite yet. Although there is still much work to be done in order to maintain or improve old streetscape features such as sidewalks; overall development is positive considering how things have been going for the last few decades
