Barnstable is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,339 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Barnstable was first settled by English colonists in 1630 and became an incorporated town in 1786. The town's name is derived from the large barns that were common on its site until the early 19th century. The first settler to arrive in what is now Barnstable was John Winthrop, who founded the second largest city in New England in 1630 and named it for himself- Barnstaple (now Devonport). Winthrop's son and successor, his nephew Nathaniel Higginson, renamed the new settlement after his father's old hometown of Dartmouth (now Milford), England. In 1786, because of poor soil conditions and many fires which destroyed most of what had been built there since1630, Barnstable voted to become a separate incorporated town under its own government with a head office at Medway called "The Post". The vote happened just before General George Washington arrived as president of America and began his presidency as part of a wave of arrivals that included Increase Mather and other prominent Puritans fleeing religious persecution in Great Britain during the Glorious Revolution. During this time period many small towns throughout New England were struggling financially due to increasing transportation costs caused by Revolutionary War efforts to win independence from Great Britain. When General Washington came into office he ordered all such towns to become " Districts" or joint military posts with specific duties mandated by him rather than being run independently like those around him- this order led to much rejoicing among some local officials who saw their autonomy restored. Like other districts created during this time period,Barnstable had no taxing power but did have exclusive use of Medway Lake for fishing and boating purposes; also like other districts it enjoyed special rights such as having its own schoolhouse brick building constructed between 1802-1804 which still stands today (). In 1814 Barnstable voters passed a Resolution requesting Congress provide them with land east of Ipswich River so they could build a canal connecting Boston Harbor with inland waterways; however this never happened because Congressional Republicans refused to fund such projects while they controlled both Houses of Congress. It wasn't until 1916 when industrialists Arthur Ashe and Alfred Payson bought over most of what remainedof The Post Office buildings including much older buildings on Water Street into what are now known as Ashe Park on Main Street ()- these developers startedto redevelop the area into one continuous complex housing several thousand people(). Although initial plans called for only modestly sized houses (), eventually larger homes were erected (). After yearsof planningand construction work starting right up until Hurricane Agnes destroyed most everything withinCasco Bayou ()about half way throughthe original development was completed () making Barnstable one OF THE FIRST PLACES IN AMERICA TO BE COMPLETED WITHIN A YEAR OF A HURRICANE! Since then things have continued improving with more new housing developments being erected (), including some very high rise towers ().
