In 1812, local residents voted to secede from Worcester County and become their own municipality under the name of "Agawam". At this time, it had a population of only 3 people. In 1824, an act became law providing for township organization within Hampshire County with each township consisting of a board of commissioners chaired by an elected mayor and including one representative from each section or township
Agawam was founded in 1630 by Puritan settlers from London. The town grew rapidly, and by 1795 it had a population of over 1,000 people. It became a center for industry and commerce, and in 1814 the first railroad reached Agawam. In 1835 the town voted to become an incorporated city.
