Baker is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Baker was made on the banks of the Lousiana River by French colonists in 1736. By 1807, there were twenty-four villages and three towns in Jefferson Parish. In 1821, a group of Methodist missionaries founded Baker Station on a small plantation near present day Baton Rouge to proselytize among Native Americans living around the area. In 1831, a post office was established at Baker with Aimee Sowell as its first operator. The community grew rapidly due to its position along I-10 and its easy access to goods and services available outside ofNewOrleans. On November 11, 1845, General Nathaniel Banks ordered all African American men between the ages of 20 and 44 to leave Louisiana for lack of cotton land suitable for slave labor. Many people stayed behind because they could not find new homes or because they wanted to keep their families together while they looked for new opportunities. About 1/3 of the town's population remained after being transported across the state line into neighboring Alabama; most arrived in February 1850 when Union forces began invading Louisiana from Texas sources under general Sam Houston

The town's current form was basically complete by 1905 when it incorporated as a municipal government under Act 9 of 1906.
