Lebanon, Indiana is a small town located in the Kosciusko County of Indiana. The population was 3,528 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lafayette, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lebanon was founded in 1809 by General James Wilkinson as a community on the banks of the Wabash River. The town was named for Lieutenant Colonel Elijah Lebanon, an American officer who fought with distinction against Napoleon Bonaparte during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1825, Wilkinson donated land to build a courthouse and schoolhouse. By 1860, Lebanon had become a principal center of commerce in Kosciusko County and boasted a population of 518 people. During World War II, Lebanese men served in various ranks within the United States military including infantry Sergeant Major John Fenton and Airman First Class Elias Sabbagh. Lebanese women also played important roles both inside and outside of their homes; many were active members of local organizations such as Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). After V-J Day in 1945, many Lebanese veterans returned home to rebuild their lives while others continued to reside in Lebanon until its official annexation into Syria in 1975. In 1957, when Kosciusko County was established as an independent municipality it annexed villages including Lebanon which then became its first village president/mayoralty with Aedan Fenton serving from 1959-1968 and Abdallah Moussa serving from 1968-1976. In 1978 Beirut mayor Aedan Fenton resigned due to health reasons after being diagnosed with leukemia but his successor Abdallah Moussa took office immediately upon his resignation effective January 1st 1978 and served until he died suddenly two years later on October 15th 1980 aged only 44 years old leaving behind an unbroken term as Mayor of Beirut which spanned nearly four decades! The current Mayor is Rafiq Shihani who has held office since November 2017
