Gun Chokes: A History in Rock Island, Illinois Rock Island is a city of over 200,000 people located in the northwestern corner of Cook County, Illinois. It is bordered by the counties of DuPage and Kane to the north, Will County to the east, and Lake Michigan to the south. The city was founded in 1871 by farmers who had been moving into what is now Cook County from Iowa and other parts of the midwestern United States. At that time, guns were not common among American farmers and there were no laws regulating gun ownership or trade. In order to protect themselves from raiders and other dangers on their farms, some early Rock Islanders decided to arm themselves with firearms. One of these men was John Ladd (1821-1892), a local farmer who built a rifle store and ammunition emporium on Center Street in 1872. He became known as the "Father of Gun Choke Resistance." Ladd's store soon became one of the most important sources for handguns and rifles in Rock Island. Gun chokes (a type of barrel choke) were used as protection against robbers, bandits,and other criminals. They were also used as part of hunting seasons because they reduced muzzle velocity which made shooting at distances much easier than with unchoked barrels. In 1904, Ladd's son-in-law Jens Jensen started a company called Larsen & Jensen Manufacturing Company which manufactured shotguns and pistols under license from European manufacturers such as Mauser and Browning. From 1906 until his death in 1942, Jens Jensen played an important role in developing handgun design within Rock Island society and economy. His products continued to be popular after he passed away and are still being made today by his descendants!

Many prominent people lived and worked in Rock Island during this time including Rufus King who served as Mayor from 1903-1904 and Edwin Drake who served as Governor of Illinois from 1923-1929. In addition, many famous athletes also spent time in or visited Rock Island during this time including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Phil Mickelson, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron (who played his last game at age 38), Ty Cobb (who played his last game at age 43), Jim Thorpe (whose recordbreaking show at Yankee Stadium was cancelled because of rain), etc. During World War II many factories were built on or around Rock River which helped produce war materiel such as tanks and planes However after the end of World War II there was significant decline in industry on both sides of the river due to technological advances like television which made production more efficient than ever before
The first white man to live on the Illinois Territory, John Nicholson, founded a small town on Rock Island in 1812. The town was named after General James K. Polk of the U.S.Army who fought in the Mexican-American War and had died two years earlier. In 1827, the town's first post office was established and it continued to be called Rock Island until 1847 when it began to be called Johnsonville because of its connection with Abraham Lincoln.
