The early history of Idaho Falls, including its location and designation as the "Birthplace of the American West" is connected to the region's Mormon settlers who started arriving in the community in 1847. By 1861, when President Abraham Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation, many Mormons had already left for Utah. In that year, General Don Carlos Bancroft donated land adjacent to present-day Idaho Falls for a new town named after him and he also contributed money towards its construction. The town was officially founded on December 1, 1861 by members of the LDS Church. John C. Fremont became its first Mayor and the first school teacher taught students in what is now known as Fremont Elementary School. As more people arrived to live and work in the area around Idaho Falls, businesses began developing and growth ensued. The post office was established in 1865 and soon became one of the most important institutions in town with both mail delivery and package service being provided. In 1887, a railroad line was built through Idaho Falls which led to increased business opportunities for residents as well as an increase in development around town. By 1935, when it merged with other companies into United States Steel Corporation, industry had moved out of downtown Idaho Falls along with much of rural America due to World War II shortages of materials such as steel. However, during recent years there have been efforts made by local officials to revive downtown activity by hosting events like art galleries or nightlife raids on nearby bars/restaurants before coming back into full swing once again following major renovations completed last year
