The first citizens were John Ladd and his family from Utah Territory; Hiram Sibley from Illinois; Cyrus Babcock from Maine; J.F.Mason from Ohio; Wm Hennawi from New York City; Geo Fenton from Pennsylvania; Nelsons Creek Band of Ojibwe Indians led by Chief Kipp (also known as Nez Perce) ; Wm Gossett of Massachusetts with brothers Isaac and Amos Gossett; Atherton Post Office opened July 1st 1892 which served until 1914 when it closed due to lack of population growth nearby Stanleyburg where the new post office would be built four years later In 1938, Hayden had its own school system combined with that of neighboring Stanleyburg In 1951-1952 a large dam across the Snake River was constructed by Ute Dam Company creating Lake Hayden which became an important reservoir for irrigation in southern Idaho Hayden has experienced significant population growth over the years including a doubling in size between 1990 and 2000 Today much of downtown is home to businesses such as restaurants, bars/nightlife options, health conscious stores etc.; while other portions remain largely rural character with agricultural land surrounding the town center
