In the early 1800s, Hawaii was a very different place. The islands were ruled by Captain Cook and his crew of HMS Endeavour. Cook was on HI when he discovered the Hawaiian Islands in 1779. At first, Hawaiians thought he was a spirit because he never landed on the isles. After tasting the delicious food that Cook cooked for them, they decided that this must be an amazing place to live. Eventually, Hawaiians started to bring firearms over from Australia and England. These guns were called "Hawaii Colts." By 1810, Honolulu had become home to at least 10 gun stores and 500-1000 guns! Gun grips were also starting to be developed in Hawaii. One of these began development in 1815 by John Browning who named his company after his ancestor James Browning who built shotguns in England during the 1700s. The first handguns used in warfare were pistols made out of iron or bronze with wooden grips. However, soon cannons became popular due to their accuracy and power. In 1819-20, Commodore Matthew Perry sent a fleet of ships intobound towards Honolulu looking for landmass known as Tarawa (or simply ‘Island’). As part of Perry’s goal of acquiring control over Japan’s maritime resources (including trade with China), Commodore Perry ordered all naval vessels carrying cannons onto the island chain without question or protest from Hawaiian leaders such as King Kahelekahō Ia (future king Kamehameha II). This event marked what is considered Honolulu’s official arrival into World War II as it became an American military stronghold against Japan…….. The first guns in Honolulu were firearms made by the Hawaiian Rifle Company. The company was founded in 1892 and produced rifles and shotguns. In 1906, the company merged with the Honolulu Rifle and Pistol Company to form the Honolulu Firearms Corporation. The corporation produced handguns until it ceased production in 1959.

The first permanent Europeans to visit what is now Hawai’i were Spanish sailors who discovered Kaua’i in 152 while exploring Manila Bay. Spanish traders gradually established themselves on Kaua’i through informal trade with local Native Hawaiians before they finally built villages there in 1672–3 when they realized that Kaua’i could support large populations without running into conflict with local chiefs. From then until 1823—when Hawaiians ceded all but Niʻihau to US rule—the only foreigners living on or near Kaua’i were American missionaries who arrived periodically forts or missions throughout much of this period (eighth century-1820). American traders soon realized that Hawaiian resources would make them extremely profitable if exploited properly; accordingly, they began exploration and development activities on Kaua'i beginning in earnest in 1824–5 under conditions where any form of native resistance seemed virtually impossible given widespread access to natural resources including oil shale (Kīlauea) and other minerals needed for shipbuilding atapi plantations close at hand; these developments also helped spur growth along Waipõyõkaha road northward fromhaulinaohe pāhoehoehei helelanaohe).
