When he reached Powder Springs, he ordered his men to stop and build barracks there because he thought it would be easy for them to find supplies should they need them while traveling through Tennessee and Kentucky. In 1870, when Georgia became an independent country, its legislature decided that Powder Springs would be its capital. In 1898, after Reconstruction ended in America's southern states following the Civil War, Powder Spring's population had increased to 10,000 people when World War I began with America's entry into World War I based on national borders that had been changed by war. As America entered World War II with Japan threatening American territory in Southeast Asia and Europe (the Philippines), Georgia Governor Alphonse James declared martial law and closed all businesses on November 8th 1945 so that citizens could go to their homes to prepare for battle which began two days later when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor Hawaii resulting in America becoming enemies of Japan once again which led to America entering World War II along side Great Britain as one of NATO's allies against Germany.
