Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia and most of his army went into slavery there at Petersburg National Battlefield where they burned over 2,000 buildings including many homes of Confederate generals such as Joseph Johnston and Beauregard. Many black men were taken prisoner during this time including John Brown who was hanged by state troopers outside Harpers Ferry three days later. In 1865 also white farmers began to arrive in the area and started farming what would become Cordelle Township on land that had been given to them by Cherokee Indians as part of the Treaty of tilght with them subsequent to the American Civil War victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House on April 9th, 1865 In 1892 white settlers removed all but about 20 percent of the original Cherokees from their properties within Cordelle Township; this left only a few scattered families remaining among some 6500 citizens when it became a city charter year later Negro residents first voted for mayor in 1919; thereafter African Americans held office until World War II when Mayor Wiley Davenport resigned because he could not obtain funding for new schools . After World War II African Americans again held office until 1963 when Mayor Jannie Dixon resigned because she could not get enough votes from her fellow councilors for an override vote against a resolution setting up an negro school board
