Clermont was founded by General James H. Clermont on November 5, 1868 as a rancho (a Spanish word meaning "ranch") on the east bank of Cedar Creek near present-day Kissimmee. The first settler in Clermont was John Pemberton and his family who arrived in 1869 from Connecticut. The town's name originated with General James H. Clermont who named it after his plantation in France which he had been born to wealthy parents. The first store opened in 1870 and the first post office was opened in 1874. In 1886, railway service began through Polk County and Clermont became one of the towns served by Fort Myers Railway Station located just north of town on FM 765 (later US 27). At that time, there were only two businesses left in town – a grocery and a mercantile business – when Fort Myers built its own station nearby in 1923. By 1940, there were over fifty businesses operating within three miles of downtownClarmont During World War II, many Americans made their homes along Cedar Creek which formed an excellent supply route for supplying troopss stationed along southern Florida's beaches during America's war against Nazi Germany In 1948, when Polk County established its first election court site outside of Tallahassee proper, Clermont became part of that new body In 1957-1960 Don Fryer operated a paper mill at Cedar Creek which produced high quality paper for local use until it closed down due to competition from other mills throughout the county In 1984-1986 Racey Goudreau operated several small convenience stores adjacent to downtownClarmont until he closed them all down because he could not compete with larger chains popular at that time such as Kmart

The first documented mention of Clermont comes from 1493 when it was called "Clermont". In 1836, the area that now makes up Clermont was purchased by General John F. Kennedy from Anna Bowen and her husband John Bowen for $3,000. The land lay between US 1 and US 132 and was considered to be very fertile because of its high levels of phosphate. After President Andrew Johnson's Executive Order 11362 moved the phosphate mine eastward, Clermont became known as "the Peculiar Land" due to its unique location on two key routes linking Tampa with Jacksonville and Miami. In 1892, Dr. Elisha Gray opened his practice in what is now downtown Clermont after moving from Stonington, Connecticut where he had been practicing for nearly 20 years. His practice became one of the most influential in all of Florida due to his innovative medical practices including using local fruit trees instead of expensive imported plants which were then common at that time. Gray also served as president of Stonington Academy which helped spur economic development around the town during this time period
