Montrose, Colorado is one of the most gun-friendly cities in the United States. The city was founded in 1876 and has become a center for firearms culture and history. The Montrose Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1915 and has been active in promoting local firearm ownership and shooting activity ever since. In addition to its rifle range, the club also operates a pistols range. Gun sights have been part of Montrose residents' everyday life for decades. One of the earliest gunssight businesses in Montrose was Joe's Gun Shop, which opened in 1916. It was located on Main Street between First and Second Streets. The shop sold rifles, shotguns, handguns, ammunition, and other firearms equipment. In 1937, Harry "Hank" Weisman opened his own gun sight business on Third Street between State Boulevard and Independence Avenue. Weisman operated his business until 1984 when it merged with Rick's Gun Sight Incorporated to form Rick's Gun Sight & Sporting Goods Incorporated. Rick'sGunSight became one of the largest privately held gun sights companies in America after merging with two other private companies: American Shooting Sports Foundation (ASF) which had holdings in sporting goods stores across North America as well as shotgun dealerships throughout California; and Firearms Distributors Association (FDA) which controlled distribution rights for millions of firearms products including handguns through its subsidiaries Federal Firearms Licensing Company (FFLC) and National Firearms Act Dealer Licensee Registration Corporation (NADA). Rick'sGunSight continued to operate as an independent company until 1996 when it merged with Brownells Corporation to form Brownells/Rick's Corporation LLC. From then on, Brownells/Rick's Corporation LLC functioned as an operating subsidiary of Glock AG who own all exclusive rights to produce handgun sights branded Glock-branded sight systems worldwide under license from Rick'sGunSight Corp., excepting Mexico where S&W Arms Holding Co.,Inc., holds exclusive rights pursuant to Mexican law

Montrose was founded in 1875 as a stagecoach stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route between Fort Collins and Greeley. The post office operated from 1876 to 1907 and from 1912 to 1951. The town became an agricultural center with dairy, hog, poultry, and other livestock operations until the late 20th century when it began to experience increased development as a bedroom community for Grand Junction. In recent years, Montrose has been home to several technology companies including Apple Inc., Intel Corporation, Blue Origin LLC, and Amazon Web Services. The first settler in what would become Montrose was James Ewing who arrived in 1875 near present-day Aspen Springs. He built a cabin on land that he purchased from the Arikaree Indian Nation. Ewing's ranch extended into present-day Aspen Creek Township before it merged with Pueblo County in 1902 under territorial government jurisdiction. A year later residents of Pueblo City petitioned for township status which they received on November 4, 1903 under new legislation creating Weld County.[2] At that time Montrose had 2 adobe buildings - one by James Ewing and one by George Haggerty - plus a few log cabinsillers.[3][4] In 1905 Wm Copley donated land northeast of town for use as a public school; construction began that year but did not finish until 1911 due to funding shortages during World War I[5][6]. During Prohibition efforts were made to catch distilleries running illegally without permits but this failed; all alcohol production ended after repeal in 1933[7] . In 1940 When the city of Grand Junction was established within Weld County,[8] Montrose became its annexe[9]. On July 1st 1944 local voters approved annexation of Aspen Creek Township which formed part of Grand Junction; however this vote never took place because there had been no annexation proclamation from county officials[10]. The post office moved from downtown Montrose to its current location at 6351 US Highway 287 (now Sunrise Boulevard) in 1951 after being removed from Main Street due to Congestion Control Act regulations.[11][12] In 1976 Montana lumber company Menard & Co.'s sawmill closed due to competition from abroad whilemontroses industry diversified into food processing and commercial trucking following deregulation of transportation industries beginning with Interstate 90 traffic improvements called "Reefer Road" project completed in 1984; today most businesses are connected through internet or phone services.[13][14] In 1984 menards closed their mill leaving montroses industry diversified into food processing and commercial trucking following deregulation starting with Interstate 90 traffic improvements called "Reefer Road" project completed..
