In 1853, a man by the name of John H. Brown invented a way to shoot targets usingankegs. This method is still in use today and is often called "Brown's Hole Shooting." Brown's Hole was located in San Jacinto County, California. He used two large anvils that he placed at right angles to each other and satuate them so that they were facing forward. The anvils were then covered with sod and left to dry. When the target was taken out of its stand, the anvil would hit it on one end and cause it to break apart into many pieces which could be shot at with a shotgun or rifle. When it was completed two years later, Padres Francisco Xavier Pulido and Antonio López de Ercilla named it after Joaquín de Balboa y Cámpora (1539–1624), who had explored southern California from Manila through Guerrero and Baja California to Sonora during his exploration expedition of 1602–03. In 1828–29 Father Gomezybecerra served as interim priest at Nuestra Señora del Carmen Los Angeles Cathedral while Father José Gomez served asMission Santa Clara's rector or vicar general; both men were natives of Burgos, Castile Province). The area now known as San Jacinto was part of the Mexican state of Alta California. In 1821, Mexico ceded it to the United States after a war over the disputed territory. The U.S. extended citizenship to all American-born citizens in 1848, and by 1850, San Jacinto had become an incorporated town with a population of about 1,500 people. The town's growth slowed during the late 1800s as farming became more common and industry became more developed. After World War II, however, San Jacinto experienced a period of rapid growth that reached its peak in the 1960s and 1970s. The town has since declined again and is now largely rural with a population of around 10,000 people.
