For example, during the Mexican–American War (1846-1847), General Antonio López de Santa Anna established a military outpost at what is now called Mission Trails Road in present-day Ciudad Juárez County that served as a base for his forces seeking revenge on American citizens who had helped repel Spanish forces at Monterrey three weeks earlier. On July 16th of that year, Mexican troops raided an American camp just east of what is now downtown san jacinto; fifteen Americans were killed including one Ulysses S Grant Jr., Major General Winfield Scott’s successor as Commander-in-Chief United States Forces in Central America On October 15th Mexicans attacked an American garrison near Slaughter Gulch southwest of Monterey Bay On November 10th Texas Rangers led by Captain James Fenton destroyed two Mexican mills at mission Adobe Walls southeast of present day El Paso A few days later on November 14th another Texan force burned down oneMexican mill located upstream from today’s Presidio Point National Monument while under orders from Commodore John Dallace commanding United States Naval Squadron Southwest Pacific Fleet off Mazatlan At night onNovember 22nd 1848 several hundred Mexicans gathered around Cerro Gordo Mountain northwest of Monterey Bay where they made use “of every natural article they could lay their hands upon such as sticks sharp stones etc.,” raising havoc among local Native Americans who subsisted mainly on game

Grant was fighting against Confederate forces near Monterey Bay. Ampurdan killed several American soldiers before being driven off by Grant’s troops; this event is sometimes referred to as the Battle of El Paso (or simply “the battle”). In 1865, California became part of Mexico again under Emperor Agustín I Alvarez y Salinas when it lost federal status following its war with America. After Mexican independence came about in 1912 under President Porfirio Díaz, San Jacinto reverted back to Uatitan jurisdiction until 1959 when it regained its own municipal government form within Los Angeles County
In 1847, Mexican land grants were made to Anglo settlers in San Jacinto County. The first post office in the county was established in 1851, and the county seat was moved from Monterey to San Jacinto in 1853. The Kiowa and Comanche tribes lived near what is now downtown San Jacinto until the late 1800s when they were relocated to Oklahoma.
