Rancho Santa Margarita was founded by Rancho Santa Cruz ranchers in 1874. The ranch became a military post in 1898 during the Mexican-American War. The post operated until 1946 when it was transferred to the County of San Diego. The current ranch is located about six miles east of downtown San Diego and includes over 122,000 acres of land. In 1907, three rifle stocks were built on the ranch: Rancho Santiago Rifle Stock No. 1, Rancho Santiago Rifle Stock No. 2, and Rancho Santa Margarita Rifle Stock No. 3. These stocks were designed by George Aiken and intended for use in the Mexican-American War and later World Wars I and II. Brent Southwick developed a stock design for his Barrett M1 rifles which he named the “Rancho Santiago” after his father’s ranch, Santiago de Cordoba, Spain where he grew up. This stock became popular with American soldiers fighting in Vietnam who used it to improve their accuracy while using carbines chambered in 5 round magazines instead of 7 rounds like most other armies at that time. The first rifle stock built on theranchodisclosed down its production facilityin1999 due to fire restrictions put into effect by then County Supervisor Dianne Feinstein as part of her anti-fire Amendment 2 campaign promise - making this one of only a few such examples throughout California where fire restrictions have impacted Gun Ownership Recordkeeping (GORM) programs statewide since 1994). After closure there were attempts to reopen but all failed due to lack of capital or government support; GORM records from these particular operations are currently archived at University of California Riverside's Department of Archives & History awaiting research and new acquisition opportunities (see: "Riflestocks closed down at Rancho Santa Margarita" dated October 10th 2009). As part as this story however recent efforts have been made to rehabilitate some old rifle stocks still extant on private property within city limits near downtown San Diego including: Rancho Santiago Rifle Stock #1 @ 12031 block McFadden Road; Rancho Santiago Rifle Stock #2 @ 11451 block Jenner Rd.; and finally Rancho Santa Margarita Rifle Stock No 3 @ 11165 block Guadalupe Rd., all situated within city limits close enough to downtown San Diego that they may yet be open for public inspection should appropriate funding become available ( see: "Reconstruction effort begins for two remaining rifle stocks from ranchosanta margarita" published online November 6th 2013 ). In addition various historical organizations have expressed interest in purchasing or restoring any such old riflesstocks left standing within city boundaries so long as their historical significance is acknowledged ( e .g.: Western Historical Society@gmail conference call transcript dated December 14th 2012). Rancho Santa Margarita, California was a ranch community in the San Gabriel Valley region of Southern California. It is best known as the home of rifle stocks manufacturer Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester) and its adjacent factory complex. The community began as a small agricultural center in 1887 on Rancho Santa Margarita's east side, and rapidly grew into a popular shopping destination for shooters and hunting enthusiasts. In 1898, Winchester merged with Remington to form Winchester-Remington Corporation. The company's new headquarters were built at Rancho Santa Margarita in 1903. At its height, Winchester-Remington Corporation employed over 500 workers at its two factories. In 1908, it acquired Browning firearms company, making it the largest gunmaker in the world. In 1916, Winchendon merged with American Rifle Company to become America's third largest rifle company. The facility that housed Winchester Repeating Arms Company closed down in 1969 after more than 50 years of production; however, several remnants of that once vast plant remain today within the confines of Winchester Corporate Headquarters park on Redwood City Boulevard in Silicon Valley.
Rancho Santa Margarita, California is a small town in southern California on the edge of the Mojave Desert. The town was founded by Mormons in 1851 and it became an American settlement after the Mexican-American War. It became part of the United States when it was acquired by Californias new statehood in 1850. Rancho Santa Margarita has a population of around 10,000 people and is located about 60 miles (100 kilometers) east of Los Angeles. The original Mormon colonists were Latter-day Saints who had moved to what is now central California from Nauvoo, Illinois in 1841. They named their rancho after Saint Margaret Mary Becket, an early Christian convert who had been martyred at Rome under Emperor Constantine's Impaler rule. The Mormons built a community near present-day Yuma County while they waited for permission from the Mexican government to set up permanent settlements within its borders. When that didn't happen, they started building their own buildings in 1851. By 1865, the colony had grown to over 200 residents with three stores, five schools, two churches and four farms. In 1863 John Copley Purchas arrived as captain of HMS Beagle carrying seeds from Chile for English farmers looking to start anew on America's vast continent followingthe Napoleonic Wars. He landed at Point Loma on October 17th and began exploring San Diego Bay Area including Rancho Santa Margarita which he named after his wife's family home at Mission Dolores de Atascadero in Alta California (now part of Pasadena).
