A smallpox epidemic that struck North America in 1793 killed more than 120 people including many prominent figures such as Governor Gaspar de Portolá and José Narváez y Gómez Aviles (Governor of Mexico). This event led to the founding of Mission San Francisco de Asís by Father Junípero Serra on October 25, 1795. Hayward was founded by a group of American pioneers in 1847. The town was named after Captain George Hayward, who had been the first person to set foot on the Hayward Fault. The discovery of gold in California in 1848 led to an increase in mining activity in the area and Hayward became one of the most important settlements on the Gold Rush trail. In 1852, Hayward became part of California when it was created as a result of Mexico's independence from Spain. The city experienced rapid growth during its early years and several large factories were built here including those that produced rifles for California's military forces and those that made glassware. By 1860, however, tuberculosis had started to spread throughout the city and it quickly faced financial difficulties. In 1865, however, Hayward incorporated as a city and began to experience significant growth again. By 1880, however, it had reached its peak population size and faced several challenges such as becoming overwhelmed by economic development or experiencing another wave of tuberculosis epidemics. However, by 1886, when Bay City attained city status within Hayward County, it had declined significantly in population size while continuing to experience high levels of economic prosperity.
