The name Dana Point comes from Captain John Dana's landing there in 1769 during the first voyage of discovery and settlement in what is now California. In 1881, it was incorporated as a town under the name Dana Point. The original Mission San Marcos (founded in 1769) and mission annexes were destroyed by fire in 1892; however, ruins of both buildings still remain today within sight of Dana Point Boulevard. Also destroyed by fire were two other missions: Mission Concepción (1827), which stood on land that later became nearby Shelter Island – now known as North Shelter Island – and Mission Santa Rosa de la Laguna (1849). In 1850, an adobe mission named Franciscan Friars' convent was completed north of present-day Dana Point Boulevard and east of Harbor Drive – this convent also served as the location for many local businesses until it burned down in 1906. Just south of present-day Highway 101 alongshore from where First Coast Salish Village once stood are remains of three more missions: Mission Concepción del Norte (1776),Mission Concepción del Sur (1777), andMission de Nuestro Señor Jesús Carrera y Pacheco(1790). All five Missions sank after being hit with a storm wave on December 12, 1811 while under construction off Carmelita Beach near La Jolla; all but one still exist offshore today as sunken ruins or coves with only their foundations remaining visible to visitor crews hired to assess damage done by Hurricane Katrina over several weeks ago.. The first white settler arrived at what is now Dana Point around 1800 including Capt John Dana who landed there on July 24th 1769 during Captain Cook's exploration expedition when he found new land flowing into western California Bay - his captain made landfall at Sicanuma Key just outside present day Wharf Street when they observed "a long cape like unto a great red lobster" he named it Dana point after himself.. After Capt John's landing some local Hohokam people killed him for food so another group led by Juan Rodríguez came ashore 2 days later killing no fewer than 30 native men then moving inland towards Yuma Valley where they began harvesting maize grown near Los Padres National Park today.. This early effort established permanent European presence hereabouts with goods brought back across open ocean Cousteau explored about 25 miles offshore from where he anchored his vessel SS Dolphin late August 1927 while sailing between Catalina Island & USCG station Long Beach
