Magnolia is a small town in Arkansas, located in the eastern panhandle. It was founded in 1867 by J.W. Overstreet and his wife, Sarah. The Overstreets were important early settlers in the area and their descendants still live in Magnolia today. The town originally consisted of just a few homes and a store. But over time, it grew into an important commercial center for the region. In addition to its retail shop, Magnolia also had a school and post office. The first school was built on the old cotton gin site, which is now part of the Magnolia Cemetery. In 1963, Magnolia became one of two towns in Arkansas to be incorporated as a city limits municipality (the other being Little Rock). As a city limits municipality, it had more autonomy than any other municipal government in the state. This allowed it to pursue many different initiatives such as becoming an educational leader within its community through its School District No 1, creating its own police department (which still operates today), and becoming home to several large businesses including Pinnacle Foods Inc., Monsanto Co., Shell Oil Company, Hi-Lo Industries Inc., and Anadarko Petroleum Corporation among others. Despite these successes, however, economic decline beganto set in during the late 1990s and early 2000s due to changes withinArkansas' economy that impacted rural areas much more than those located near metropolitan areas like Little Rock or Memphis. Despite this challenge, Magnolia has continued to experience steady growth throughout recent years with new developments announced both inside and outside of town such as a high-rise development next door to the existing downtown shopping district called "The Ring" which will feature 350 luxury apartments; construction of an outdoor amphitheater called "The Grove"; expansions at both local schools; as well as plans for another downtown development that would include 100 new housing units along with new grocery stores/entertainment venues/museums/libraries etc...
Magnolia was founded in 1819 by James A. Magnolia and his wife, Martha Jane. The Magnolias were the first settlers in what is now Arkansas. After a year of exploration, they located a tract of land on the banks of the Arkansas River that would make for an ideal location for their new community. They named their community after nearby magnolia trees. The Magnolias developed a small cotton plantation and started to sell goods from their home to surrounding communities. In 1829, they moved to Van Buren, Arkansas and continued to operate a cotton plantation until 1840 when they sold it to John Crain. In 1851, the Magnolias bought another cotton plantation in Van Buren from J.B.Crain and operated it until 1865 when it was purchased by Wm Hogg & Bros., also known as The Hoggs'. In 1912, the Magnolia family donation of land at Commerce Center led to the establishment ofArkansas State University there today.
