In the early 1800s, Fairhope was a small town in Alabama. It was known for its gun magazines, which were used to store and sell firearms. At that time, NRA membership totaled over 20,000 individuals. By 1870, NRA membership had reached 100,000 individuals. The town was founded in 1881 by farmers who moved from Mobile, Alabama to find better land. The first post office was established in Fairhope on July 12, 1881. The name "Fairhope" was given by Captain John Fairbanks and his family when they settled the area on their farm near present-day Fort Payne. The fairgrounds were built as part of a larger development called White Sands that included homes, stores, churches and other businesses. The fairgrounds were renamed Fairhope Park in 1912 after President Woodrow Wilson visited the area and pronounced it "the most beautiful place he had ever seen." The white sand beaches along Gulf Shores Boulevard are still popular today for swimming, sunbathing and windsurfing. Inlandicipation park boundaries extended well into Montgomery County until 1993 when they were transferred to Jefferson County following the Census Bureau's recommendation that allilanous communities be incorporated within counties instead of having separate governments for each community type.

Fairhope, Alabama is a small city located in the state of Alabama, United States. The population was 9,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of Mobile County. Fairhope was founded in 1818 and incorporated as a town on November 3, 1868. The name derives from two terms: "Fairy-hope" which means "a hope deferred," and "HOPE" which stands for Hope, Opportunity and Grandeur. The early history of Fairhope can be traced back to 1818 when James Fairbanks donated 2 acres (0.8 km2) to the town of Fairhope for use as an agricultural district. By 1828, $6000 had been raised to purchase additional land and build a courthouse and schoolhouse (now known as the First Baptist Church). On February 14, 1830, citizens voted to change the name to Fairhope after visiting one of local springs that yielded cool water with the word Fairy written on top in gold letters. In 1840, cotton cultivation began operations in what is now Fairhope and soon became an important factor in its growth as a community. A new courthouse was built in 1846 along with several other buildings including a jail and post office. In 1863, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, violence broke out between white supremacists who supported President Abraham Lincoln's Union side and African Americans who opposed Confederate General Robert Ewell's forces. Many people were killed or wounded including three men fromFairhopy who were later lynched by Ebenezer Robinson Jr., a white supremacist leader operating out of Mobile County
The first permanent settlement in Fairhope was made by the Alabama Purchase Party on November 3, 1819. The party consisted of General James Wilkinson and his brother General Robert Wilkinson, as well as Colonel John C. Smith and three other men from Tennessee. They traveled to Mobile Bay on August 29, 1819 with a small fleet of boats and set up camp near what is now downtown Fairhope. A few days later, they learned that Fort Gibson had been taken by the United States military under Major Robert E. Lee. The group decided to move their headquarters westward to Fort Gibson in order to prevent U.S troops from entering Mobile Bay without permission from the British government. On October 10, 1820, the Alabama Purchase Party arrived at Fort Gibson and began construction of a new fortification which would be known as "Albany." The fortifications were completed in May 1824 and named for James Ketchum, an early settler in this area who had helped lead the purchase party. Albany served as the main garrison for Negroes during Reconstruction until it was transferred to Montgomery in 1865. Fairhope continued to grow during its early years as a small community founded by white settlers who desired access to Mobile Bay for fishing, hunting, and trading purposes. By 1830, however, there were only about 20 residents living in Fairhope proper while also serving as farmers and traders along the bayou system adjacent to it. In 1832-1833 a large slave market was established at Albany which attracted buyers from all over South America including Brazil and Venezuela In 1840 Fairhopy became one of four counties within Jefferson County when that county was created from parts of Monroe County In 1845 voting rights were granted to black citizens of Jefferson County after passage of an amendment passed by Congress which nullified state laws preventing blacks from owning property . . .
